The most common cause of mucosal swelling is an infection associated with tenderness and ache in the swollen area. A rare cause of swelling that one should bear in mind is submucosal (surgical) emphysema, which is caused by air in tissue due to treatment. In such a case, crackling can be felt when palpating.
