Serum aspartate aminotransferase (S-AST)

Aspartate aminotransferase is mainly present in the liver, the cardiac muscle and skeletal muscles. Serum AST activity rises in the presence of several acute diseases, as the enzyme leaks from the cell into the serum due to cellular damage.
